If you only read announcements

You do not need an account to read an announcement, and we do not record which announcements you read.

Your city. The front page may guess your city from your internet connection, to show you announcements near you. That guess is not stored. If you choose a city yourself, it is kept in a cookie on your device so the page opens there next time — the cookie holds the city and nothing else.

Server logs. Like every website, our hosting provider sees your internet address when you visit. It is used to keep the site running and to stop abuse — for example, to slow down anyone sending too many requests — and is not used to identify you.

If you sign in

We keep your name, email address and profile picture, as given to us by Google, or just your email address if you sign in with an emailed link. A cookie on your device keeps you signed in.

We use these to let you publish and manage announcements, leave condolences and save announcements. We do not sell them, use them for advertising, or send you marketing email.

What a family publishes

An announcement holds what the family typed into it: the name of the person who has died, their photograph, dates, city, the obituary, the services and their venues, and — if the family chooses — the names of relatives and how they are related.

Once published, it can be read by anyone with the link, and is listed on the site’s front page and in its search.

Photographs are reduced in size and have their hidden details — including the location where they were taken — removed on your device before they are uploaded. A published photograph can be opened by anyone with its address.

Drafts can only be seen by the person who created them.

Condolence messages

A message holds your name as you typed it, your relationship to the person, and what you wrote. It can be read by anyone signed in to Final Repose.

Before a message appears, its text is sent to an automated screening service (an AI model, reached through OpenRouter) to check that it is a genuine condolence and does not appear to contain private details. Only the message text is sent — not your name or email. The family can remove any message on their announcement.

Saved announcements

When you save an announcement, only you can see that you did. No page shows who saved it or how many people have.

Who else handles this information

We use a small number of services to run the site. Each handles information only to provide its service to us:

• Vercel hosts the site and stores photographs. It sees everything the site serves, and visitors’ internet addresses.
• Neon is our database. It holds accounts, announcements and messages.
• Google handles sign-in, if you choose it. It sees that you signed in to Final Repose.
• Resend sends sign-in emails. It sees your email address.
• OpenRouter screens condolence messages. It sees the text of a message.

Photographs are stored in Mumbai. Our database is in Singapore, and some of the other services handle information outside India.

How long we keep it

We keep an account, and everything it has created — published announcements and unpublished drafts alike — until the account is deleted.

A condolence message that has been removed is no longer shown to anyone, but is kept for up to a year, in case it was removed by mistake or is needed to deal with a complaint. After that it is deleted.

Your choices

You can ask us to:

• see the information we hold about you;
• correct it;
• delete your account and what you have posted; or
• take down an announcement about a member of your family that was posted without your agreement.

Write to admin@finalrepose.com, the address of our Grievance Officer, Yoel Dsouza. We acknowledge a request within 24 hours and resolve it within 15 days.

There is no button to delete an account yet — we do it by hand when you ask. Deleting your account also deletes every announcement you created, published or not; we will remind you and ask you to confirm first.

Children

Final Repose is not for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly hold information about children who have signed in.

Changes

If we change how we handle information in a way that matters, we will update this page and say so on the site before the change takes effect.
